Everest centenary celebration

22 JUNE 2021: The Everest centenary celebrations are now in full swing - or would have been, but for the continuing lockdown. In 1921 a British reconnaissance expedition made the first foray to Mount Everest. It is one of five expeditions featured in Peter's anthology of Everest photographs and texts which has now been published, in a magnificent two-volume production, by the Folio Society and the Royal Geographical Society, and is winning some wonderful notices. The Alpine Club centenary exhibition, to which Peter also contributed, was due to formally open next week. That has now been postponed to July 27. In addition Peter and Leni have been invited to one or more events at Winchester College, where George Mallory was a student. The precise dates are to be confirmed - so watch this space! The photograph below was taken by Noel Odell at Everest's North Col on 6 June 1924 : Mallory is to the left, his climbing partner Sandy Irvine to the right. It is the last-known photograph taken of the two men before they disappeared close to the summit two days later. (RGS Photo)
